Scouting Waubonsie Valley boys basketball
Waubonsie Valley
Coach: Steve Weemer.
Last year: 16-11, 6-6, tied for third in the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division; lost 63-62 to Glenbard West in the Class 4A Glenbard East regional quarterfinals.
Top players: Jared Brownridge, jr., G; Jack Cordes, so., F; Bryan Jefferson, jr., G-F; Brandon Malby, sr., F; Dylan Warden, jr., G-F; Tyler Yanisch, sr., G.
Scouting report: Weemer hopes the memory of a quick playoff ouster by a team 15 seeds lower will help motivate his returning players, which aren’t a lot. Though Cordes and Jefferson go 6-foot-6, both are wing forwards. A goal is to overcome youth and the lack of a true big man with speed, team rebounding and Brownridge. The 6-foot junior, who averaged 15.4 points with 72 threes, has offers from Bradley, Creighton, SIU, UIC and others. Working hard to add a floor game to his jumper, Brownridge will attract much attention, so Waubonsie needs scoring from players such as Warden, Jefferson and returning point guard Yanisch. Malby is the undersized, high-energy forward Waubonsie always seems to have. “I really like their cohesiveness, and their chemistry already is ahead of last year,” Weemer said.
