Your news Southminster’s local mission project aids 17 homeowners
Approximately 200 members and friends of Southminster Presbyterian Church, as well as local business owners and Scout Troop 132 rallied in early November to make much-needed repairs on 17 homes in Wheeling Township owned by low-income or senior residents.
The “God Energizing Mission” or GEM project, which was a half-year in the making, was in celebration of the church’s 50th anniversary in Arlington Heights. The church worked with Wheeling Township to identify homeowners in need of help.
“GEM was wonderful because everyone involved, both homeowners and members of Southminster, were so excited about the project,” said Jean Walker, project co-chair along with Sandy Pifer. “This was a total team effort.”
Church members from 5 years old and up were encouraged to participate in the GEM project through one of these teams: House Assessment and Work, Publicity, Food, Worship, Caregiver, Devotionals, Worship, Finance or Prayer.
The GEM weekend began with a supper on Friday evening, where everyone gathered to learn about the following day’s activities; work in the homes from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, with a break for lunch and devotions with the homeowners; and a breakfast gathering/worship service where three of the homeowners gave testimonials about their gratitude for being helped, and church members spoke about their experiences.
“It was so exciting being a part of the GEM project,” Pifer said. “It was amazing how God energized our congregation, and provided us with a beautiful day in which to do our labors of love. A big thank you to all the local businesses that made such a difference to the families we served.”
Community businesses that provided services, supplies and/or equipment for free or at reduced costs included: Ahlquist Construction Co., Ibbotson Heating Co., Jay Haack Builders, Quality Plumbing, and Suburban Trim and Glass.
Some of the tasks accomplished included: new furnace and floor, countertop and windows; painting; window washing; general cleaning; carpet replacement and cleaning and; landscaping; gutter cleaning; roofing; and plumbing repairs.
