Wheeling High recognized for commitment to manufacturing
The Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Local Chapter 5 in Chicago, in cooperation with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Foundation, has recently informed Wheeling High School that it is one of two local high schools in the Chicago Metropolitan area to be recognized for commitment to Manufacturing through Education.
Wheeling High School is recipient of the “Best High School Overall Industrial Machine Shop Program” recognition award for the year 2010-11. This award recognizes Wheeling for its commitment to integrating STEM (Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Technology) and PLTW (Project Lead the Way) into the overall industrial machine shop program and integration of CIM (Computer-Integrated Manufacturing) and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Machining Technologies.
In addition, Wheeling’s Industrial Technology Council plays a key role in the continued development of young adults into manufacturing skills in high demand in the Chicagoland Area. The Technology Council plays a key role in providing materials, expertise, internships, and employment for those ultimately wanting a career in manufacturing, with or without college.
In his letter to Dr. Lopez, chairman of Chapter 5 SME, Robert Lossi, stated, “This award is a measure of your commitment and passion to keep manufacturing in America and to support the industrial base around you by providing career path alternatives into manufacturing.”
The SME Chapter 5 has over 500 active members in the business of Manufacturing Engineering. SME believes in inspiring youth through math and science and providing college scholarship support, as well as motivating adults with a passion to build manufacturing expertise in existing and new industries throughout the greater Chicago manufacturing area.
