Christmas Fair with a unique twist

The Alternative Christmas Fair at the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren not only celebrates the spirit of the Christmas season but gives unique expression to the congregation's long-standing commitment to peace, social justice, and community service. It will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, December 3 at the church, located where Larkin and Highland Avenues merge.

Shoppers can purchase gifts that support Heifer International, the organization that sends gifts of livestock to people in developing nations. They will find hand-made, finely crafted items from around the world, and they can trust that a larger than usual portion of the purchase price will go directly back to the artisan. There will be fair trade coffee and fair trade chocolate and books, toys, and games that emphasize peace, justice, and simple living.

Congregation members will offer scrumptious baked goods, a soup café, and a kids' craft corner where childcare will be provided.

All proceeds will support local and worldwide efforts such as the Community Crisis Center, PADS, Soup Kettle, On Earth Peace, the Global Food Crisis Fund, Habitat for Humanity and more.

The church is at 783 W. Highland Avenue on the Y formed by Highland and Larkin Avenues. Call 847-741-5124.
