State representatives honor Lake veterans
Submitted by Joseph Woodward
State Representative Sandy Cole (R-Grayslake) and State Representative Kent Gaffney (R-Wauconda) teamed up recently to honor the veterans of Lake County.
The event, “An Evening With Our Veterans,” welcomed dozens of veterans to American Legion Post 911 in Wauconda.
“As a State Representative, I continue to advocate for the men and women who have served our country and risked their lives for our freedom,” said Rep. Cole.
“Notwithstanding our state’s significant financial challenges and the slow economy, I remain committed to protecting veterans’ access to affordable health care, educational advancement and employment opportunities.”
Dinner and literature pertaining to important state issues impacting veterans were offered by Cole and Gaffney. Representatives from the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, as well as the Lake County Veterans’ Commission, attended to field questions relating to social services, housing, educational opportunities and additional programs available to Illinois veterans.
“I was pleased to host this event as an opportunity to help our men and women who made sacrifices for our liberty as a state and nation,” said Rep. Gaffney.
“We worked very hard to provide as much information about the services available to veterans and their families. I am grateful for the wonderful response from veterans’ organizations; I want them to know that they have a voice in Springfield.
“As a member of the Armed Forces and Military Affairs Committee, I am looking forward to working with our veterans and service members to meet their needs.”
“An Evening With Our Veterans” is an annual initiative by Rep. Cole to get the latest state-related information into the hands of veterans directly. Rep. Gaffney, recently appointed to the Illinois House of Representatives, will serve on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
