A vehicle was involved in an accident with a Metra train this morning, Libertyville police confirmed. Both northbound lanes of Butterfield Road, approaching Route 137, are closed, police said. The Metra train, heading to Chicago through the north suburbs, is running behind schedule because of the accident, which occurred at a grade crossing, according to the company's website. Passengers traveling to Deerfield, Lake Cook Road, Northbrook, N. Glenview, Golf or Morton Grove should get off at Lake Forest and take train 2106 into Chicago, according to the advisory. Full story

Jury selection started yesterday and will continue today in the trial of Melissa Calusinski. The Carpentersville woman is accused of killing 16-month-old Benjamin Kingan by throwing him to the floor at the Lincolnshire day care center where she worked. Full story.

Triple amputee Bryan Anderson of Rolling Meadows has written "No Turning Back," and the story of his life since he was severely injured in Iraq hits stores today. Later this week he'll be signing copies at a suburban bookstore. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">School praised for turnaround</h3>

Frederick Elementary School in Grayslake is one of only nine schools in the state that increased academic achievement over two consecutive years as federal performance benchmarks increased. The school with nearly 800 firth- and sixth-graders had more than 85 percent of its students meet or exceed No Child Left Behind standards. In 2009, less than 70 percent of the students met the standards. "It is especially remarkable to see schools flagged for improvement make the dramatic changes necessary to get off status," said State Superintendent of Education Christopher Koch. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Man injured when car strikes house</h3>

A 44-year-old Mount Prospect man was injured yesterday when he drove off a roadway in Arlington Heights and smashed into the brick exterior of a home. Yang Soo Yang was driving on North Buffalo Grove when he left the roadway, drove through a wooden fence, snapped a tree in two and crashed into the home. Yang suffered multiple broken bones and was cited for multiple driving infractions. A nurse told police Yang may have suffered a diabetic reaction before the crash.

<h3 class="briefHead">Police 20 iPads richer following arrests</h3>

Arlington Heights police have landed themselves 20 iPads after the arrests of two Florida residents last year suspected of possessing more than 100 fraudulent credit cards. The Secret Service Asset Forfeiture Group awarded Arlington Heights the iPads because it was not possible to determine from where they were taken. The tablets are being used for everything from investigations to evidence collection to communication within the department. Full story.

<h3 class="briefHead">Stalberg scores in overtime in Hawks' 5-4 win</h3>

The Blackhawks headed to overtime last night with the Central Division foe Nashville Predators, and for the second time in as many games Viktor Stalberg scored the game-winner. Stalberg closed out the game, but it was Patrick Kane who lead the way for the Hawks with two goals and an assist in the 5-4 victory. "One thing about Nashville, you know how they're going to play," Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "They're going to play hard, simple, be in your face, check well and try to frustrate you."
