Students spend more time in nature

Leave No Child Inside and District 220 partner to offer second-graders outdoor field study

Submitted by Susan Lenz and Pat Winkelman

Over 700 second-grade students from Barrington District 220 visited historic Vehe Farm in Deer Park as part of their science curriculum and the local Leave No Child Inside initiative.

The property at Vehe Farm offers students the opportunity to observe several different ecosystems in proximity to each other. In the Betty McLaughlin Memorial Butterfly Garden, students recorded scientific data regarding the stages of the milkweed bug’s life cycle and the weather conditions.

In the restored prairie, students carefully caught and observed insects while using their imaginations to pretend they were an insect.

Lastly, teachers led their eager students along a newly cut path around the restored wetland perimeter generously prepared by Citizens for Conservation and Leave No Child Inside volunteers to view the diverse wildlife and vegetation.

Students recorded their data and observations in a Leave No Child Inside prepared and developed field guide in either English or Spanish which they brought home to complete and later return to their teachers. The field guide also lists other local nature preserves which students were encouraged to visit with their families. The anticipated end result of not only the students but extended families spending more time outside in nature.

The awe and wonder of the student’s discoveries was priceless. To sum-up the adventure, one student announced “I love doing science!”
