Downtown Elgin offers doubleheader of frightful fun Oct. 29

On Saturday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin, will once again present "Elgin's Halloween Howl," a family-friendly afternoon of frightfully fun festivities in downtown Elgin.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sherman Health's Halloween Family Fun Fair will feature family-friendly activities and a kids costume contest.

Go trick-or-treating from noon to 4 p.m. at downtown Elgin businesses.

From 1 to 3 p.m., Elgin Public Museum will hold a "Bone Hunt," a fun Halloween archeological dig on the grass in front of The Hemmens, 45 Symphony Way.

From 1 to 3 p.m., the Midwest Dance Collective will teach the Thriller Dance, under the direction of Ellen Werksman. She will be teaching kids the Michael Jackson Thriller Dance on the Nightmare on Chicago Street stage at Chicago Street and Douglas Avenue.

From 1 to 4 p.m., get your kids photos taken in their Halloween finest at the Kids Costume Photo Booth at Ken Stepps' State Farm, 111 Douglas Ave.

From 1 to 4 p.m., the Psychosis Haunted House, 200 N. Spring St., will have a matinee "kid-friendly" haunted house.

Halloween crafts and musical activities from 2 to 3 p.m. in the basement of The Hemmens, presented by Elgin Area School District U-46.

At 3:30 p.m., Elgin Symphony Orchestra's "Spooktacular Concert" at The Hemmens. Come in costume to hear some "boo"-tiful music. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for kids and available in person at the box office on the day of the concert or purchase tickets in advance at www.ElginSymphony.org.

That evening, join the Zombie Defense Initiative from 6 to 11 p.m. as the city of Elgin presents "Nightmare on Chicago Street."

Chicago Street (between Douglas Avenue and Villa Street) will be closed for a Halloween music festival, with local bands, theater performances, a zombie walk, live burlesque show, a costume contest and specials from downtown businesses, as well as a visit from Svengoolie and Victoria Price, granddaughter of legendary horror actor Vincent Price.

Admission is $7 at the gate with $5 discounted advanced tickets available at the DNA Office, 2 Douglas Ave. Children under the age of 17 must be accompanied by an adult (age 21 and older).

The schedule will be: Kashmir (Led Zeppelin tribute band) from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; ARRA (classic rock tribute band) from 8 to 9 p.m. and 9:30 to 10:30 p.m.; costume contest with Svengoolie from 9 to 9:30 p.m.; Meet and Greet with Svengoolie from 9:30 to 11 p.m.; and a Burlesque Show by Dancewerks Dance Productions from 10:40 to 11 p.m.
