Arlington Hts. panel to talk about education

The League of Women Voters invites the community to “Education: Our Children, Our Future,” featuring a panel of educators from local school districts, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Arlington Heights Historical Society, 110 W. Fremont.

Everyone has a stake in the quality of our educational system. Participants will discuss issues of funding and equal educational opportunity as well as the nature of the Common Core Standards and proposals to assess whether the standards are being achieved.

This program is part of the League’s yearlong study about what should be the role of the federal government in education and how best to implement the Common Core Standards, developed jointly by most of the states.

The panel includes Dr. Steve Cordogan, director of research and evaluation for District 214; Dr. Dale Truding, assistant superintendent for student learning, Arlington Heights District 25; Dr. Nancy Wagner, assistant superintendent of instruction, Elk Grove Township District 59; plus a representative of the teachers association.

“We owe it to our children and our country to take seriously the challenge of creating the best possible education system so our children can compete in the global economy,” said Cathy Duoba, president of the league chapter.
