Glendale Heights provides family-oriented Halloween fun

The village of Glendale Heights gave residents a chance to enjoy a fun, family-friendly prelude to Halloween Sunday.

The 16th annual Halloween Funfest took place inside the Sports Hub facility. Costumed children were able to see a magic show or participate in a number of games for candy treats.

Craig Morales laughed as he watched his 5-year-old son, Jason, try to hit a puck into a small hockey goal blocked by a small white ghost. Jason couldn’t score, but he was given a treat anyway.

“I guess his costume got in the way,” Morales said, pointing to his son’s Captain America duds. “Those muscles can make it hard to shoot.”

Morales said he appreciates the fact that the village holds a child-centered event before Halloween.

“The kids get so excited about it, you know? They want to put on their costumes all day,” he said. “This is a nice way to get dressed up and have some fun.”

Pat Sawicki agreed. She attended the funfest with her 6-year-old daughter, who was dressed as a princess.

“All she’s been thinking about is this costume, so it’s great to let her put it on have some fun,” Sawicki said.

Next door to the funfest, the Glendale Heights Haunted House was open for business with a special lights-on tour. The scary sounds of a creaking door and evil laughter could be heard from just outside.

“Now, if it were up to me, that’s where we’d go,” Morales said, laughing. “But I think it’s still a little too much for him.”

The haunted house will be open with its regular program Friday through Oct. 31.
