West Aurora wins share of 1st DVC title

The West Aurora girls volleyball claimed a share of its first DuPage Valley Conference championship since joining the league in the fall of 1997 with its convincing 25-5 and 25-14 straight-sets victory over Glenbard East Thursday night in Lombard.

The Blackhawks (24-12, 12-2) entered the regular-season finale against the Rams (7-22, 0-14) deadlocked in a three-way tie with the two Naperville high schools.

Naperville North handily defeated Glenbard North, but West Chicago topped Naperville Central in three games, leaving Naperville North and West Aurora as co-champions.

“It’s been our goal since freshman year to win the DVC,” said West Aurora senior Alexis McKenzie, who set up Lauren Carlini (8 kills, 7 assists, 3 aces, 2 blocks) with the match-closing kill.

The Blackhawks did not allow a service point in its dominant first-game win, and senior Kelsey Richmond had 4 consecutive second-game kills to engineer the sweep.
