Mt. Prospect’s St. Emily cross country ends successful season

The St. Emily’s Cross Country team has enjoyed a successful season this fall. This was topped off with a first-place team finish for the varsity girls team at its conference meet held Oct. 3; a first-place finish for both the varsity boys and girls at the Notre Dame Invite Oct. 4; and a third-place finish for the varsity girls at their Sectional meet held at Melas Park Oct. 8.

By placing in the top three teams in the Sectional meet, this qualified the varsity girls to run in the Illinois Elementary School Association state meet Saturday, Oct. 15, in Bloomington/Normal.

The St. Emily team is part of the Northwest Catholic Conference and this year the varsity girls took first place in all of their conference meets. At the conference meet, the top five girls placed in the top 16 runners: Michelle Figuel, second; Julia Bergstrom, fourth; Audrey Magnoni, sixth; Theresa Donahue, 14th; and Ellen Paczko, 16th. Other members of the varsity girls team are Catherine Hafner, Nicole Weiss, Kaitlyn Denten, Bridget Stephens and Ciara McAleer.

The boys team was lead by Brendan Igoe, seventh grade, and Paul Bergstrom, sixth grade, along with Christian Maggio, Kenny Hasley, John Hafner, Jack Raimondi, Richard Rinka and Kevin Igoe. The team is comprised of 35 runners ranging from fourth to eighth grade. They have worked for their accomplishments beginning with practices in early August, and putting in extra time on the weekends to work toward their goals.

St. Emily School is at 1400 Central Road, in Mount Prospect.
