Open house at veteran center

Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Director Erica Borggren, a McHenry native and U.S. Army veteran, is scheduled to attend an open house from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at a veterans drop-in center, 5330 Elm St., McHenry.

The center is part of the Lake-McHenry Veterans and Family Services initiative. Veterans, reservists, active military personnel and their families are welcome to drop in, have a cup of coffee and share the power of talk to cope with challenges.

Free group sessions and mentoring are provided by professionals who themselves are veterans or military family members. Also, referrals for veterans who return with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury will be available.

The initiative is led by a consumer-driven governance council in conjunction with the Lake County Health Department and the McHenry County Mental Health Board.
