Proper attire is show of respect

I praise Mary Patton who not only believes teachers must project a proper image by wearing appropriate attire at school, but courageously prodded officials into enforcing the dress code for all employees in school campus.

I truly believe it is the responsibility for teachers (and parents) to be exemplary to students how to be respectful to ourselves before expecting others to respect us. Why? Because how we dress for all occasions is the very first step.

No, it is not a written rule, but I emphasize dressing appropriately is a sign of respect for the people you are in front of. It presents a good impression to the public.

In Asian countries like Japan, Korea and China, for instance, it is unthinkable to have not only teachers, but parents, young and adults alike, going places such as schools, churches, government offices, department stores and even market places with tank tops, shorts, flip-flops.

I hope Mary Patton’s concern and suggestions that a clear dress code policy, if possible, even with a civic code of manners and etiquette will be enacted — not limited only at Woodland Elementary District 50, but at all schools in Illinois and all states throughout this great nation.

Teachers, especially, are not just educators for study, but the most influential models for the students’ future. It all starts with self-respect with what we wear and why.
