Sen. President Cullerton's mother dies

The mother of Illinois Senate President John J. Cullerton died Friday at a Naperville nursing home.

Mary Patricia Cullerton was 85 and a mother of nine children.

“As her oldest child, she held a special place in his life,” said Rikeesha Phelon, spokeswoman for Cullerton. “They are taking the opportunity at this time to honor her memory, but to celebrate the legacy she left behind.”

Mary Patricia Cullerton was born in Chicago on Sept. 16, 1926, and was a longtime resident of Winfield, where she raised her children with her late husband John J. Cullerton, Sr.

Family members said she recently suffered a stroke.

She is survived by four sons, five daughters and 21 grandchildren.

A funeral will be held Monday at St. John the Baptist Church, S233 Church St. in Winfield at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to be sent to Clearbook, 4155 O'Hare Drive, Hoffman Estates; St. Francis High School, 2130 W. Roosevelt Road, Wheaton; or Misercordia/Heart of Mercy, 6300 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago.
