New bicycle signage in the village of Hoffman Estates

You may have noticed some new green and white bicycle signs in Hoffman Estates. Through a grant from the Cook County Department of Public Health, bicycle route signage has been installed along 18 miles of streets in the village. The signs are intended to help bicyclists reach key destinations.

The new signs meet the latest federal standards for signage, and include distance and direction information to help riders navigate the routes. The project will help to implement the village’s recently adopted comprehensive Bicycle Plan, which identified 65 new miles of bicycle facilities.

The village encourages you to get out and explore the great bicycle paths and routes throughout its boundaries.

It is important for all road users to share the road and follow other basic safety rules. Bicycles have the right to use all village roads unless otherwise posted.

Drivers and bicyclists should keep the following tips in mind:

Ÿ Always remain vigilant and be prepared for the unexpected

Ÿ When biking on the street, stay as far to the right as possible, but at least three feet away from parked vehicles to avoid the “door-zone”

Ÿ When riding near the curb, be attentive to surrounding conditions

Ÿ Remember to follow all state and local traffic laws, including stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks

Ÿ Bicyclists must ride in the same direction as vehicles

Ÿ Bicyclists should wear helmets and use lights if operating at night

Ÿ Remember to clearly signal your turning movements to motorists along the roadway

Ÿ Drivers should make sure to look for bicyclists and provide a clear space
