No injuries when Metra locomotive derails near Elburn

Metra trains on the Union Pacific West Line will not be traveling any farther than the La Fox station for most of the night due to a derailment that occurred near the Elburn station tonight.

The locomotive on Metra train No. 41, which was due into Elburn at 5:35 p.m. but was running late, derailed about 6:10 p.m. very close to the station, said Metra spokesman Michael Gillis.

Gillis said the locomotive stayed upright, and all other passenger cars remained on the tracks.

About 40 people were on the train when the derailment occurred, but there were no reported injuries, Gillis said. The passengers were able to safely exit the train and walk to the station

Metra officials did not have an estimate of when trains would be able to operate in and out of the Elburn station but said it could be a few hours.

It is not clear what caused the locomotive to derail.
