Mexican diplomat coming to West Chicago festival

Chicago’s Consul General of Mexico, Eduardo Arnal, will be a guest of honor at West Chicago’s Mexican Independence Day Parade and Celebration.

The Mexico City-born diplomat was appointed by President Felipe Calderon and ratified by the Mexican Senate on March 24. Arnal has a degree in law from Universidad del Pedregal in Mexico City.

He will join West Chicago Mayor Mike Kwasman and the Rev. Matthew Nathan of St. Mary’s Parish Sunday, Sept. 18, on the Main Stage in downtown West Chicago for El Grito, the traditional bell-ringing that symbolizes Mexican patriot Miguel Hidalgo’s ringing of the church bells that started the revolution against Spain.

“The event, which literally has people dancing in the street, celebrates the historic occasion of Mexico’s independence and provides an opportunity for the entire community to come out to celebrate the rich cultural gifts that are part of that history,” Kwasman said.

Additional historical elements include a special exhibit by People Made Visible Inc. at the Fox Community Center, 306 Main St., focused on the southernmost country of North America and the vibrant culture that has traveled to West Chicago with its immigrants, plus authentic costuming, music and dance.
