Driver plows through Warrenville restaurant patio, 5 hurt

Five people were injured, two of them seriously, when a vehicle drove through a Warrenville restaurant's patio during lunchtime Wednesday, according to police.

The driver of a 2011 Buick LaCrosse drove through a wrought-iron gate at the Rock Bottom Brewery restaurant and through the outdoor seating area before smashing into the side of the building at 12:24 p.m., according to police.

A restaurant employee was pinned between the building and the vehicle before the driver accelerated in reverse into an unoccupied parked car. That collision sent the parked car into a second parked vehicle, according to police.

All five people who were injured were taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where the two most seriously injured remain hospitalized, according to police.

The driver was not injured in the crash, which occurred at 28256 Diehl Road.

The driver's vehicle was towed, and Warrenville police are working with Illinois State Police to determine if a mechanical defect caused the incident.

No charges have been filed, but police continue to investigate.
