Addison chamber’s flag program commemorates 9/11

The terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001, that killed 3,000 Americans also brought an outpouring of patriotism and compassion in this country to comfort and help those whose lives were forever changed by the violence.

With the 10th anniversary of that fateful day drawing near, many ceremonies are being held as part of national campaign to honor those who died, pay tribute to rescuers, and encourage volunteerism and good deeds.

The Addison Chamber of Commerce and Industry is giving local businesses, groups and individuals an opportunity to personally join that effort with its “Addison Remembers Red White & Blue” campaign. Between now and Sept. 11, the chamber is offering American flags to sponsor for $100. The flags will be displayed on light posts in the village from the beginning of September through the end of November.

“Our great dream would be to have 200 flags displayed through the municipality,” said Bernadette LaRocca, executive director of the Addison Chamber. “It’s something we did 10 years ago after the tragedy of 9/11.”

The money for the flags will cover the chamber’s cost for the project and what is left may go to the chamber’s scholarship fund or another charity, LaRocca said.

Sponsors will be recognized on the chamber’s website at www.addisonchamber.org and by an e-blast newsletter. They will be informed of the location of their flags, which will be turned over to them when the display is over.
