Native American powwow coming to Busse Woods in September

A new weekend event to learn about and experience Native American culture is planned next month at Busse Woods.

The American Indian Center of Chicago and Cook County Forest Preserve District will hold a traditional Powwow, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18, near the boating center at Busse Woods Forest Preserve, near routes 72 and 53.

Native dancers and singing, arts and crafts vendors, cultural demonstrations, Native American foods, archery, storytelling, entertainers and a kids’ craft corner will be there.

There will also be an additional Education Day for kindergartners to eighth-graders from 10 a.m.-noon Friday, Sept. 16. Group rates for schools are available, call the American Indian Center in Chicago at (773) 275-5871 or the Trickster Gallery in Schaumburg at (847) 301-2090.

Admission Saturday and Sunday is $5; children 4 and younger and adults 60 or older are free.

Gates open at noon Saturday and Sunday. Powwow dancing will be 1-4 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to dusk on Saturday, and from 1-4 p.m. only on Sunday.
