Chain O' Lakes hosting Venetian Night Saturday

A parade of lighted boats is scheduled to precede the village's largest fireworks display when Fox Lake's 4th annual Venetian Night takes place Saturday.

The event, which usually draws thousands of people to the town, also features a street party on West Grand Avenue with food, music, and beverages, Venetian Night organizer Chris Valenziano said.

The fest runs from 6 p.m. until midnight.

“This is a wonderful event in the village of Fox Lake,” said Amy Serafin, Fox Lake's director of parks and recreation. “And, we certainly appreciate all the support from the volunteers, business owners, and those that have contributed to make this a success.”

Valenziano said the fireworks finale, performed by Mad Bomber Fireworks, is paid for by donations collected at various fundraising events in the village.

“Our previous fundraising event raised about $10,000 to help fund the cost of Venetian Night,” she said. “The largest chunk of that money went to pay for the fireworks.”

Donations are still being accepted by the village.

“Any money we raise from here on out goes directly toward putting on a bigger and better fireworks show,” she said. “The event has tried to be self-supported, and the village only sponsors the event, but does not donate financially toward it.”

Those attending are encouraged to park at the Fox Lake Metra Train Station on Grand Avenue, from where a shuttle van will be taking people the three blocks to the lakefront.

Valenziano said boat owners wanting to take part in the parade can still apply. The parade winner will take home $500, with a second place winning $300, and third taking in $200. All boats that enter win a participatory prize package that includes gift cards equal to the $25 entry fee.

“This years theme is ‘America on the Chain,'” Valenziano said. “It's our way of paying tribute to the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11th, as well as recognizing the men and women still serving our country.”
