Assaults on cops are up

Chicago’s top cop says he doesn’t know why police-involved shootings are up, but he says there’s been a spike in assaults and batteries on cops.

Chicago police have shot at least 41 people this year. That’s more than all of 2010 when 25 people were shot by cops.

Superintendent Garry McCarthy said aggravated assaults and batteries against police have more than doubled in the last decade. He spoke at a news conference on Tuesday saying police need help from community. He said parents need to ensure that their children observe the city’s curfew.

Since Monday evening, there have been three police-involved shootings. That includes a Tuesday night incident involving an off-duty officer who shot and wounded a man after the officer stopped for what he thought was a traffic accident.
