Take precautions when cleaning up from flood

WHEATON — Officials say flooded basements caused by heavy weekend rain in northeastern Illinois create more than just cleanup headaches.

DuPage County Health Department officials warn residents that dirty water from floods can cause disease and injury.

The water can contain raw sewage, bacteria and viruses. Officials say people should minimize skin contact -- especially open sores -- keep children away from contamination areas and not eat anything exposed to the contaminated water.

To prevent injury, turn off main power switches if necessary. Appliances and electrical outlets should be dry before use and oil and gas systems should be secure and free of leaks.
