Mount Prospect library closed due to flooding

The Mount Prospect Public Library will remain closed Sunday after water from Saturday’s early morning storms flooded the parking lot and seeped into the lower level lobby and the Friends of the Library storage area.

Executive Director Marilyn Genther said 2 feet of water pooled in the library’s underground parking garage Saturday morning and flowed into the building, damaging several boxes of donated books packed up after last weekend’s Friends of the Library book sale.

The library, 10 S. Emerson St., didn’t open Saturday while pumps worked to remove the standing water, but because the elevators were not yet operational late Saturday the building was to remain closed Sunday.

“We’re not going to open until our lobby is safe and our elevators are working,” Genther said.

She said she’s “90 percent” sure the library will reopen at 9 a.m. Monday, barring any further damaging rains.
