Students develop trade skills

Submitted by Betsy Fresen

District 96 Country Meadows fifth-graders eagerly anticipate Trade Fair, the culminating event of the Colonial Life social studies unit.

The students create objects to trade and — as entrepreneurs doing business with their classmates — develop firsthand understanding of the effects of supply and demand on an economy. They also practice persuasive communication skills as they work to make those trades that will bring them the goods they want.

Country Meadows fifth-grade teachers Lauren Backe, Lauren Fishman, Kristen Linnenburger and Jennifer Zbylut also appreciate that this activity offers their students an opportunity to be creative and to develop practical business skills.
