VFW turns trash into treasures

Cindy Dahl probably doesn’t need a new, still in the box, Lynn Hauldren bobblehead. And her son John could likely do without a Tusk the Walrus Beanie Baby.

Yet she justified both purchases Saturday morning in the name of helping a good cause during the Villa Park VFW Post 2801’s first Mega Parking Lot Sale at the post, 39 E. St. Charles Road.

“We’re just down the street,” Dahl said. “So we grabbed a few dollars and came out to see what was here. Who doesn’t want an Empire carpet guy bobblehead?”

Each of the 15 participating sellers paid for their spaces and extra for tents and tables. Those funds, as well as money collected during a special raffle at the parking lot sale, will help pay for a Sept. 17 event the post is hosting to thank all veterans and welcome home those who have been away.

“It’s a great day booked with speakers, entertainment, and informational sessions to help vets understand what benefits and resources are available to them as they reacclimate to being home,” said Rosemarie Beasley, the sale and welcome home event organizer. “Last year, we had about 2,500 veterans come out. And this year, we hope to have an even bigger event, thanks to the proceeds from the (parking lot) sale.”
