LITH’s first flea market opens July 9

Lake in the Hills’ first flea market is slated to open in two weeks, and organizers are racing to try to finalize plans for a car show on opening day.

Organizer Anthony Serillo said that 50 vendors have put in a cash deposit and more than 200 others orally committed to showing up Saturday, July 9, at the Lake in the Hills Street Market, 8601 S. Route 31, just south of Rakow Road.

In April, the village approved plans for an outdoor flea market with 132 vendor spaces and 169 parking spots. “We know that some of the verbal commitments are not going to show up,” he said. “We’re expecting a pretty good turnout.”

The goods for sale will include antiques, jewelry, art, vintage clothing and more. Serillo also said he hopes to add a farmers market-style section of the flea market in time for opening day.

The market will be open rain or shine because four large tents will cover about 60 percent of vendors, Serillo said.

Serillo said his father, Nick Serillo Sr., is the enterprise’s main organizer. Anthony Serillo and his brother, Nick Serillo Jr., owner of Nick’s Pizza and Pub in Crystal Lake and Elgin, are helping out, he added.

The 25-acre site belongs to Plote Homes of East Dundee, and 5 acres will be used for the flea market, Serillo said. “We have plenty of room to expand,” he said.

Lake in the Hills Police Sgt. Eric Decker said that the village is still determining if there will be any police presence at the market, such as to direct traffic.

The Lake in the Hills Street Market will be open noon to 5 p.m. the second and fourth weekend of the month beginning July 9. For details, visit lakeinthehillsfleamarket.com or call (847) 773-7770.
