Wauconda begins economic development effort

Wauconda village board members say they are ready to begin work on a project to expand business, residential, and open space development.

Among the key areas of the village that could be targeted are much of the vacant land between routes 176 and 59, the downtown Main Street area, and south of Route 12.

“Our number-one goal is to look at ways to spur economic development,” Trustee John Barbini said.

The village board’s economic development and building and zoning committees met in a joint session Tuesday, and determined the work will start with an update of the comprehensive plan.

Zoning Administrative Consultant Chris Miller presented an overview of the current plan, last updated in 2007, as well as future changes to be made in order to reflect current conditions.

“The comprehensive plan is sometimes ignored in other villages,” he said. “But I would like to say that our community doesn’t ignore it.

As a document guiding future land use action, Wauconda’s comprehensive plan is fundamental to any changes the village wishes to make, he added.

Officials also will review annexation policies, update and discuss further development in targeted areas of the village, and examine zoning issues or guidelines for signs and facades in the village.

“One of the big concerns is that we are the only village along route 12 where the road bypasses the town,” Barbini explained. “So most people will drive right on by. We’re looking at ways to increase the traffic flow into the village.”

While economic development has been an issue for the village over several years, officials said, it was only in the last two years it became a matter of great focus.

“We need to break down and pinpoint what areas we want to go after,” Trustee Doug Buster said.

In the long run, village officials will also have to consider cost.

“Our next thing would be to put all the pieces together so that we know where we stand and if we’re working within a budget for the fiscal year,” Miller said.

Other joint committee meetings to discuss the issue are scheduled for July 14 at 6 p.m., July 27 at 5 p.m., and Aug. 11 at 6 p.m., at Wauconda village hall.
