Drug dealer suspect nabbed by Schaumburg police

A Chicago man accused of selling heroin to an undercover officer briefly escaped capture Wednesday night by running across Route 53 in Schaumburg, police said.

Corey D. Coleman, 22, of the 200 block of Laramie Avenue, faces a charge of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a park or school after he eventually was nabbed in Busse Woods, Lt. Dawn McDermott said Thursday morning.

She said Coleman and an undercover officer has been contacting each other for about two weeks to set up a heroin deal. They ultimately arranged to meet about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of Martingale Road, McDermott said.

After the purchase was made, the officer motioned to have the man arrested by awaiting police officers, McDermott said. However, Coleman scuffled with two officers, escaped, then ran east across busy Route 53 to elude capture.

“We were shocked he didn’t get hit by a car,” McDermott said. “But he made it across, then tried to hide in Busse Woods.”

She said officers tracked Coleman through the forest preserve, eventually trapping him minutes later.

Coleman also was charged with two misdemeanor counts of battery and a single count of resisting a peace officer.

McDermott said it was unclear at this time when Coleman would appear in bond court.
