The real culprit in the bailout mess

I do not understand how the government can lose $14 billion on the bailout. We, the citizens who funded the bailout with increased indebtedness, did so by taking over a large number shares of stock in both Chrysler and GM. The stock was virtually worthless at the time. We have sold off large portions of that which we bought at a time when prices of those stocks had increased (no loss if selling for more than the purchase price.)

The companies have each paid back that which was borrowed or large portions of it. If they have not paid it all back, then they still owe that which has not been paid back, right? The math showing a loss must have been done by the same bankers who got bonuses for running their companies and the U.S. economy into the ground.
