Mayor holding grudge at library?
I was interested in reading your June 9 article on the failure of Wheaton Mayor Michael Gresk to reappoint Colleen McLaughlin and Carol Honeywell to the library board. There is no question that the mayor has this authority.
By his comments in the article, it appears that he continues to hold a grudge about the disagreement between these members of the board and himself. His withholding their reappointment appears to be his way of extracting a ”pound of flesh” for their sincere efforts to assist the library in best managing their financial resources for the betterment of both the library and the patrons they serve.
He could have and should have handled this matter in a much more civil and diplomatic way. If asked why he did not reappoint these individuals, he could have merely responded by saying that he felt that it was time that other members of the community should have an opportunity to serve on the board. It appears, by his own words and actions, he has made it clear that anyone on any city commission that votes on any issue related to the board they serve on that does not agree with the mayor’s view will not be serving beyond their current term.
In closing, I and many other Wheaton citizens would like to thank and commend both Colleen and Carol for their dedicated service and contributions to the library and their patrons.
