Wheeling HS freshmen pack food for needy

A group of Wheeling High School freshmen, most of them Class Board members, traveled May 19 to the Aurora facility of the nonprofit organization “Feed My Starving Children.”

The 11 students, along with WHS guidance counselor Rick Watson, volunteered their time to help pack meals specially formulated for malnourished kids around the world.

“Feed My Starving Children” is a nonprofit Christian organization that is committed to ending hunger for youngsters and babies in nearly 70 countries worldwide.

“Feed My Starving Children” has seven locations in the United States where individuals are invited to volunteer. There are two sites In Illinois; the other is in Schaumburg.

High school groups working with the organization are able to strengthen curriculum efforts focusing on citizenship, social service, asset building and other positive aspects of character development.

The volunteer experience can provide a real-world application of classroom learning. Students are able to work together for a finite period of time and with a specific, high-value outcome.

At the end of every volunteer session the group knows exactly how many meals were produced to eliminate hunger in the world, making the effort much more tangible and personal for the students.
