Mundelein to host wakeboarding contest

The thrills get bigger each year with Mundelein Park & Recreation District’s Diamond Lake Wakeboard Competition and on-water demo featuring high-flying spins, tricks, grabs and more.

The fourth annual one-of-kind event for all ages and wakeboarding skills returns to Mundelein beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25, on Diamond Lake, 1016 Diamond Lake Road, between Route 60/83 and Lake Street/Route 45.

Come out and enjoy this cool sport and root on your favorites as they perform flips and tricks. The competition and beach admission are free. For everyone’s safety, boating is not permitted until the conclusion of the event.

Those wishing to compete can join in for prizes in four judged divisions: outlaw, wakeskate, beginner and intermediate.

The event is sponsored by Munson Ski & Marine of Lakemoor. Visit www.munsonski.com. Competitors can register in advance by contacting Munson Ski & Marine, (815) 363-5400, or by emailing matt@munsonski.com. Registrations will also be taken on the morning of the event at 9 a.m.

A boat-towed sport involving water skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques, wakeboarding continues to grow in popularity. The Diamond Lake event brings together some of the best wakeboarders to compete for prizes and an opportunity to showcase their talents to area fans.

“We are very excited to host this unique event,” said Mundelein Park District Director Margaret Resnick. “It’s a great way for everyone to spend time outdoors, learn about the sport and enjoy Mundelein’s beach.”

Diamond Lake Beach is open daily through Aug. 7. It offers lake swimming, soft sand, boat launch, picnic grove, waterfront playgrounds, and a new floating SportsPark. Daily and season passes are available. Children ages 2 and younger are admitted free every day with paid adult admission.
