Appell Dental Group of Arlington Heights Welcomes Its Third Generation
On May 7, 2011, Aaron Appell marched down the UIC Pavilion aisle and become the third generation in his family to join the 65 year old family business: Dentistry. The graduation began with Dr. Aaron singing the Star Spangled Banner, accapella, in front of his fellow graduates, colleagues and the 1200 members of the audience.
The graduation culminated with a hooding of the new dentists. Aaron's father, Dr. Joel Appell, had the honor of hooding his son; thus awarding him his Doctorate in dentistry.
Aaron grew up in Northbrook attending Glenbrook South, then Colorado State University. During his sophomore year of college, Aaron volunteered at a local hospital and he began to realize his path. While working in the ER, Aaron became acutely aware of the brief time most medical personnel had with their patients. The inability to connect with people frustrated him. The following summer, he worked as an assistant at the Appell Dental Group with his father and uncles. There it became clear that he wanted to join the family business. He really enjoyed the friendly way in which the patients, staff and dentists interacted. Each patient was treated like family. The Dentists' often treated several generations of the same family and the pride they took in their work and relationships with patients helped Aaron make his decision.
This summer, Dr. Aaron will be joining his uncles, Stuart and Lester of Wilmette and his father Joel of Arlington Heights in practice at the Appell Dental Group. This general dentistry practice began in 1945, when grandfather Seymoure returned from serving 5 years in the Army. Seymoure's first office was in Logan Square. In those days, Chicago dentists did not work on Wednesdays or Saturdays. So Appell opened an office in Fox River Grove to supplement the Chicago practice. The Logan Square office closed in the late 1960s, moving north to Petersen Avenue. There Stuart joined his father in 1971, Lester in 1977 and Joel in 1980.
Today Appell Dental Group maintains an office on the corner of Arlington Heights Road and Lake Cook Road. Remodeled in 2007, this “state of the art” organization boasts equipment and facilities designed for patient comfort while providing the most up to date, highest quality dental care. It is the Appell Dental Groups' goal is to provide a comprehensive team approach. The three brothers have over 100 years of experience treating patients. During this time, they each have developed areas of expertise in a variety of dental subspecialties. By having the three of dentists' available, patients benefit from their combined knowledge of any dental challenge.
With the addition of Dr. Aaron the scope will now broaden. When asked about what aspect of Dentistry he enjoys the most, Appell spoke of his artistic nature. He finds the challenge and joy in taking someone's mouth and transforming it into a beautiful and functional part of their life.
