Dancers raising money to fight cancer

Stevenson High School will host a charity dance show Tuesday, June 14.

The curtain goes up on the Dancers Against Cancer Benefit at 7 p.m. at the Lincolnshire school’s performing arts center. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a silent auction.

The benefit will honor Frayda Nechamkin, who died of colon cancer last winter. Two of her three daughters attend Stevenson, and they will dance at the benefit.

The event is sponsored by On Your Toes Academy of Dance in Buffalo Grove.

Funds raised at the benefit will go to Dancers Against Cancer, which will forward the money to Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care and the Colon Club in memory of Nechamkin, who was a close friend of On Your Toes owner Louise Taitz.

“I have known Frayda for eight years, when she first signed her two daughters up for dance classes,” Taitz said. “She was such an important part of our studio, always helpful and kind.”

Auction items will include: a stay at the Hampton Inn; a Lifetime Athletic Club membership; and Chicago White Sox tickets with parking and Stadium Club access.

Tickets for the benefit are $22 for adults and $15 for children. They can be purchased at On Your Toes, 1014 Weiland Road, Buffalo Grove, or through Taitz at dancecompany3@yahoo.com.

Advance tickets will come with a cancer awareness ribbon.
