Riding with the ‘Posse’
As the sun streamed through the tree tops, horseback riders made their way along the wooded trails at Old School Forest Preserve near Libertyville to take advantage of a rare, beautiful spring morning.
The Lake County Mounted Posse organized the horse ride for 16 riders who took advantage of the trails in the Lake County Forest Preserve, and later had lunch in the picnic area.
“The forest preserves are great because they are about the only place that we can ride anymore,” said club President Pete Jackson of Wadsworth. “We are really fortunate to have them and they make sure that the trails are well maintained, no matter what the weather conditions.”
The horse club is based in Lake County with members from northeastern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin who participate in monthly rides in various forest preserves and state parks.
The object of the Posse is to keep alive the spirit of the “Old West” by promoting the sport of horseback riding through activities, such as horse shows, trail rides, and parades.
The main requirement for participating is owning your own horse. Visit www.lcmp.info or email webmaster@lcmp.info.
After the horsemen returned from a leisurely ride, they unsaddled their horses and brushed the dust from their manes.
“It was a gorgeous day to ride,” said Vickie Wancho of Lindenhurst, who sponsored the ride. “It’s fun to go riding with friends on an nice day.”
