Prospect High lockdown over, man detained

A report of a shooting near Prospect High School led to a soft lockdown at the school Tuesday morning, but while the incident ended in a man being arrested, it turned out to be less serious than initial reports indicated.

Mount Prospect police said that a 52 year-old woman was shot with a pellet gun on Monday by her brother in a home on the 600 block of Larkdale Lane. When her family learned of the incident Tuesday, they contacted police at 10:58 a.m.

Police initially thought the shooting had just happened with an actual gun.

When police got the woman out of the house, they were told that there were guns in the house and took appropriate safety precautions, Operations Cmdr. John Wagner said. After a brief conversation with the brother, he walked out of the house and surrendered to police of his own accord, Wagner said. The woman was examined at the scene but declined medical treatment for minor injuries.

Prospect High School Principal Kurt Laakso said the incident did not involve the high school, except to make sure students were safe during the police activity.

“We’re making sure we minimize foot traffic and car traffic; we’re just cooperating,” Laakso said about 11:30 a.m.

At 1:11 p.m. the Mount Prospect Police Department gave the all clear and the soft lockdown ended. Students and staff were once again allowed to enter and exit the building. The shooting is still under investigation and charges haven’t been announced.

Prospect seniors graduated over the weekend, but classrooms were full of underclassmen on Tuesday. The last day of classes for them is on Friday.
