Some respect, please, on Memorial Day

Each year I look forward to Wheaton’s Memorial Day parade. Men and women from our armed forces, marching proudly, flags, lots of flags, Wheaton school bands playing patriotic music, children in their scouting uniforms — all there to honor those who have served in the military and who have given their lives in that service.

One of the joys associated with this parade is the absence of politicians. Sure, the city council and mayor also march, but they are, as a group, apolitical. This year, a prominent politician from Wheaton, one who was taking part in the ceremony at Wheaton Cemetery, used the parade to march with his entourage, waving and smiling as if it were ... the Fourth of July parade.

Simply marching, perhaps with the city council members, or even by himself, would have shown the respect that the day deserved.
