Wheaton Municipal Band fills Memorial Park June 9 with classic sounds

The Wheaton Municipal Band summer season continues at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 9 in Memorial Park, 208 W. Union Ave, Wheaton. Music director Dr. Bruce Moss raises his baton to present a concert filled with classic band sounds.

The concert opens with “The Sinfonians”, a march by Clifton Williams, and continues with the energetic “Celebration Overture” by Paul Creston. Both pieces are staples in the wind band repertoire.

Featured at this concert will be French horn player Josh Blumenthal of Naperville. He will perform the Third Movement from the Mozart Horn Concerto No. 4, an audience favorite.

The concert highlights two larger compositions. The first is “Variants on a Medieval Tune” by Norman Dello Joio. The piece introduces the familiar "In Dulci Jubilo" theme and explores it through five variations. The result is an exciting and challenging work. The second large work is the “Enigma Variations.” Edward Elgar composed the piece as a puzzle for the audience, embedding the identities of 14 people and a dog.

It wouldn't be a classics night without a movement from a Symphony. Symphony No. 3 by Vittorio Giannini shows off the band's romantic side. The concert ends with marches to keep everyone's toes tapping.

Don't miss this exciting concert on Thursday, June 9 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Park.
