Illinois senators get physical, involve police

SPRINGFIELD — An Illinois state senator says he filed a statement with police alleging he was punched in the chest by a fellow lawmaker.

Republican Sen. Kyle McCarter of Decatur says he was punched by Sen. Mike Jacobs, East Moline, on the Senate floor after a debate Tuesday.

McCarter had pointed out in debate that Jacobs' father was a lobbyist for Commonwealth Edison and that Jacobs was sponsoring legislation benefiting ComEd.

Jacobs confronted McCarter afterward.

Jacobs scoffed at the idea of involving the State Capitol Police. The East Moline Democrat suggested McCarter was joking.

The police could not be reached for comment early Wednesday morning.
