Vernon Hills rallies past Grayslake Central

Vernon Hills 9, Grayslake Central 8: At Lakes, the Cougars trailed by 3 runs and were down to their final four outs.

But with two out in the bottom of the sixth, Chris Argianas singled for Vernon Hills and scored on MJ Crowley’s hit into right-center field.

Chris Marras, who earlier had flied out to the deepest part of the park, then jacked a 2-run homer to tie the Class 3A regional final at 7-7.

The Cougars then took the lead on Tyler Coppney’s RBI double. Anthony Mazza’s RBI single capped the huge inning.

Nick Hosford doubled and scored for Grayslake Central (24-11) in the seventh. But reliever Ryan Lane got the final out on an Argianas-to-Mazza forceout at second base, vaulting Vernon Hills into Thursday’s 4 p.m. sectional semifinal against Richmond-Burton at Grayslake Central.

Lane earned the win in relief of starter Tyler Feece.

Richmond-Burton 7, Antioch 0: At Richmond-Burton, the Class 3A regional top seed and host Rockets won the regional championship.

Antioch finished its season at 21-10.
