Cub Scouts Beautify Buffalo Grove
(Buffalo Grove) On Saturday, May 21 twelve cub scouts from Pack 140 out of Saint Mary Parish got their hands dirty. The scouts planted nearly 50 plants in an area that started as dirt and weeds. The beautified area is a permanent addition to the community of which Cub Scout Pack 140 has been a member for over 50 years. Pack 140 scouts participate throughout the year in many community service projects. This project has a special purpose. The plants are perennials and will grow back bigger and stronger each year, just as the scouts become bigger and stronger each year. Just as Pack 140 is a permanent member of the community so is this new beautiful area. The scouts are having a plaque created and it will be located within the beautification site.
The scouts learned a little bit about flowers before the planting. They learned the difference between perennials and annuals. They were taught how deep and wide to dig a hole. The scouts placed peat moss in the bottom before planting the plant and learned the importance of using peat moss.
Pack 140 presented the beautification plan to the Village of Buffalo Grove Public Works department. They then worked together to find a location. Parents from the pack donated perennial day lilies, hosta, daisies and black eyed Susan's. Twelve annuals, one for each boy participating, were donated by Dirty Hands Garden Center in Stockbridge Wisconsin and mulch from the village was used to finish the project. Stop by and see the area located at Raupp Blvd. and Church Street in Buffalo Grove.
