Learn more about hearing loss from Advocate Condell

Hearing loss is the third most common health problem in the United States, according to the American Academy of Audiology. More than 36 million Americans are affected. Although hearing problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all hearing-impaired persons are younger than 65.

May is Better Hearing Month and Advocate Condell Medical Center affiliated physician Ben Johnson, M.D., is encouraging people to become more aware of the causes and treatments of hearing loss.

Johnson, an ear, nose and throat doctor, says hearing loss can be caused by a variety of factors and can even lead to relational problems.

“Hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud noises; ear infections, trauma, or ear disease; harm to the inner ear and ear drum; illness or certain medications; and deterioration due to normal aging process,” Johnson said. “Family members can become frustrated and get tired of repeating themselves. People with hearing loss can get embarrassed and withdraw from social situations.”

But Johnson says there is hope for those who suffer from the condition. He says the most important thing is to take that first step and talk to your physician.

“Hearing aids and various surgical procedures have come a long way in recent years and most people who suffer can find help,” Johnson said. “I strongly recommend that if you or a family member thinks they might be dealing with hearing loss, they should talk with their doctor and explore possible treatments.”
