Christian Liberty makes history with regional win

The Christian Liberty Academy softball team made history on Saturday.

It won the school’s first IHSA postseason award in the sport, winning the Class 1A Morgan Park Academy regional championship.

Junior catcher Megan Krizanovic belted a 3-run homer to left field in the first inning and went 4-for-5 with 2 doubles to help lead the Chargers’ 13-hit attack in a 10-7 victory over host Morgan Park.

The Chargers will advance to the Serena sectional and face Newark in the semifinal on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Other top hitters for the Chargers on Saturday were Carly Baric (3-for-5), Cammi Kott (2-for-4, double) and Rachael Sotomayer (3-for-5).

Amber Monasterio threw 4 innings in relief to notch the win.

Elk Grove 5, Lincoln-Way North 4: Junior shortstop Krista Soesbe went 2-for-4 with an RBI as Elk Grove (29-4) finished the regular season in Stone City.

Juniors Megan Keegan (RBI) and Becca Walz also doubled for the Grens, who received an 8-hitter with 6 strikeouts from junior Dani Goranson (26-4).

Palatine 9, Resurrection 2: Senior lefthander Dani Boisvert (18-8) struck out four while tossing a 7-hitter for the host Pirates (23-9).

Katie Mnichowicz (3-for-4, 2 doubles), Lauren Logan (2-for-3, double, triple), Katie Scovic (2-for-4) and Alexis Bauer (2-for-3) led the offense for Palatine.

Schaumburg wins two: Hannah Kerr notched her first varsity win as Schaumburg (17-10) edged Rockford Boylan 7-6 at the South Elgin invite.

The Saxons broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the seventh when Brianne Lingl doubled and Alyssa Lanacaster drove in the run.

Saxons senior Becca Thompson (2-for-4, 3 RBI) belted a homer while teammate Courtney Plackner went 2-for-3 with a double.

Lancaster (8-7) picked up a win when Saxons blanked South Elgin 8-0. Jenna Lane (3-for-4) belted 2 homers.

Other top hitters were Thompson (3-for-4, 2 doubles, RBI), Jessica Cook (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI) and Jen Anderson (2-for-4).

Buffalo Grove 4, Stevenson 3: Sophomore pitcher Megan Fu improved to 3-2 and also belted her first home run for the host Bison (16-14).

Fu led off the Bison’s 3-run third inning with a homer over the center-field fence. Erin Barton, Andrea DiPrima and Danni Shapiro also had hits in the inning and KC Dunne walked.

Dunne also doubled in the first inning and came home to score on an error on Barton’s sacrifice bunt.

Wheeling splits: Host Highland Park won the opener 7-2, getting all its runs in the first inning.

Freshman Katie Quagliano pitched the final six innings for Wheeling in relief and did not give up a run.

Wildcats sophomore Sara Kern was 2-for-4 while Emily Walker tripled. Alyson Fallon and Taylor Schroeder each doubled.

Quagliano picked up the win in Game 2 when the Wildcats scored 8 runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 16-6 triumph.

Wheeling sent 12 batters to the plate in the seventh when sophomore Walker (3-for-4) belted a grand slam.

Other top hitters were Kern (3-for-4), Schroeder (2-for-6, 2 doubles), Sejal Shah (2-for-4), Fallon (3-for-6) and Ashley Hafertepe (3-for-6).

Hersey 5, Maine South 3: Junior Morgan Palmer was the winning pitcher for host Hersey (10-19) as senior teammates Danielle Becker had a 2-run single and Mallory Eichhorn doubled.

Baseball

Leyden 2, Maine West 1 (9 inn): Playing under the lights at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Leyden (25-5) scored the decisive run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by senior Carlos Olavarria, who had 2 hits.

Junior Angel Sanchez (5-1) came in relief of senior Justin Stawychny to get the win.

The Eagles’ next game will be in the Niles North North regional semifinal on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
