Durbin watches out for the ‘little guy’
I am proud to have Dick Durbin as my senator. His record shows he not only represents all of Illinois but all of America in a positive manner. In 2006, Time magazine listed him as one of the best senators in the nation. Dick Durbin has been the champion for the “little guys.” He has ratings of 80 percent to 100 percent by the Disabled Veterans of America, Children’s Defense Fund, AARP, woman’s rights groups and many more.
Conservatives do not rate him high, but Illinois is not a very conservative state. Liberal causes are Social Security, Medicare, care for the sick, food stamps to feed the poor — all which fall under domestic tranquillity and the common good. Are these anti-Christian, anti-American ideals? What would Jesus say?
Remember in his last election an overwhelming majority voted for Sen. Durbin. He seems to be willing engage unions to help strengthen our state and the country. Unions are the being blamed for this and other state’s financial woes. Please remember it was unions that fought for health care, occupational safety, paid holidays, paid vacations and the 40-hour workweek. I believe our officials should work with organized labor for a solution not just destroy their collective bargaining rights.
As for chairing the subcommittee on Muslim civil rights this again this is in Sen. Durbin’s character of standing up or the “little guy.” Islam is the fastest-growing religion in America. In this nation based on religious freedom no one should be punished for his or her beliefs.
Benjamin Franklin said it best: “America’s greatest strength is our tolerance and diversity.” I will continue to support Sen. Durbin because of his efforts to help all Americans and his vision of a better America.
