Former Clarendon Hills cop charged with stealing guns

A former Clarendon Hills police officer has been charged with stealing weapons from the department’s evidence room where he worked.

Daniel M. Ryan, 48, of Westmont, is accused of taking five weapons from the room in 2007. None of the weapons were involved in any crime; they were from a “turn in” program, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Authorities received an anonymous tip about the missing guns in February. Ryan resigned from the department April 22.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated possession of a stolen firearm, five counts of unlawful possession of a stolen firearm, one count of theft and three counts of official misconduct — all felonies.

The stolen guns include an Ithaca M1911 A1 World War II U.S. Army .45 caliber gun; a .22 caliber Short Butler; a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber Airlight Special; a Mossberg 590 12-gauge shotgun; and a Connecticut Valley Bobcat .50 caliber gun, officials said.

Ryan turned himself into authorities Friday. He posted the required 10 percent of a $30,000 bail that was set by Judge Robert Kleeman.

Ryan is due in court again June 14.
