Neighbor charged over Craigslist posting

A 2008 Craigslist posting offered free flowers and bushes to anyone who wanted them from a house in unincorporated McHenry County.

The advertisement said the homeowner wanted to “thin out” the plants and shrubbery from his front yard.

But it turns out the homeowner never posted the notice. Authorities say his neighbor did.

Kristen Thompson, 37, of McHenry was charged with a felony count of theft after she turned herself in on Thursday, according to the McHenry County sheriff’s office.

Individuals who showed up at the victim’s residence didn’t know the posting was fraudulent and believed they were acting in good faith, officials said.

Thompson posted 10 percent of $15,000 bail, and she is due in court May 13.
