No one injured in Vernon Hills fire

No one was injured in a basement fire in the 400 block of Albany Lane in Vernon Hills, officials said.

The Countryside Fire Protection District was called to the scene of the working fire at 6:43 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

When they arrived, firefighters saw smoke coming from the roof and siding of a single-family house, and a neighbor using a garden hose to try and put out the blaze.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, fire officials said.

The fire was contained to one room in the basement, officials said, and extinguished.

Smoke alarms were present and working in the house, officials said.

The house suffered an estimated $70,000 in damage was deemed uninhabitable. The residents received assistance from the American Red Cross.

No cause has been determined and the fire remains under investigation, officials said.

The Countryside Fire Protection District was assisted by firefighters from Mundelein, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Grayslake, Deerfield, Highwood and Palatine.
