Trial set for ex-Island Lake mayor’s wife

A Lake County judge told the attorneys on the Sharon Hyde theft case Thursday he wants the trial to begin June 6.

Hyde, 60, the wife of former Island Lake mayor Thomas Hyde, is accused of collecting $114,000 in pay for hours she did not work as director of a village-run day care center over a 10-year period.

A trial of the theft and official misconduct charges filed against her in 2009 was supposed to start Monday, but new filings by attorneys on both sides of the case forced a delay.

On Thursday, Foreman told the lawyers he wants to start jury selection June 6, and said he is prepared to tell prospective jurors they may have to work through the weekend or into the next week in order to finish the case.

Prosecutors have said they intend to call as many as 17 witnesses against Hyde, and defense attorneys have at least two experts they want to have testify in support of Hyde.

If convicted of all the charges against her, Hyde faces mandatory prison sentence of six to 30 years.
